Fucoidan is starting to become one of the most interesting immune system enhancers of our time. Scientists have conducted an extensive array of in vitro and animal studies that have found fucoidan exhibits powerful inhibitory action against herpes and HIV viruses. Its ability to significantly enhance natural killer cell activity also indicates that it can strengthen immunity during the cold and flu season, as well as help protect against formation and growth of abnormal cells.
Experiments have suggested that fucoidan may not only inhibit the initial stages of viral infection, such as attachment to and penetration into host cells, but also the later replication stages after virus penetration. A pilot study was conducted at the University of Chicago where researchers found similar properties when fucoidan was consumed orally by humans. Ingestion of fucoidan was associated with increased healing rates in patients with active infections. In addition, patients with latent infections remained asymptomatic while ingesting fucoidan.
Some experts have concluded that because of the ability of fucoidan in inhibition the herpes virus, this could be why there is a much lower incidence of herpes simplex virus type 2 infections in Japan, compared with the west as the Japanese diet contains a high consumption of fucoidan-containing seaweed.
